Jama attended a pro-Palestine rally in Toronto on October 8. On Oct. 10, she posted a statement on social media regarding the Palestine-Israel conflict, calling for a ceasefire and condemning Israel’s occupation of Palestine, which some Jewish groups called anti-Semitic. However, Independent Jewish voices have supported her. Ontario Premier Doug Ford called for her resignation. Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles asked Jama to retract the remarks. On October 11, Jama posted an apology for the pain Jewish Canadians felt and condemned terrorism by Hamas. But she did not retract her remarks. Two weeks later, Stiles ejected her from the party caucus for insubordination, saying Jama’s comments “have contributed to unsafe work environments for staff.”
The progressive Conservatives censured Jama, which prevented her from asking questions of the government or speaking in the legislature. In April 2024, an Ontario court dismissed Jama’s request for a judicial review of her censure from the legislature. That same month, Jama refused to leave the Ontario legislature because she was wearing a Palestinian kaffiyeh despite the prohibition on “overtly political” attire. A month later, she was removed from the legislature for refusing to take off her keffiyeh.
